  • computers used to be big and got smaller and smaller as time went on
  • computers talk through packets
    • a small piece of information that goes from one computer to another
    • computers interconnected led to them exchanging packets
  • packet switching - message is broken up into packets and then sent in any order (reassembled by the recipient)
  • bandwidth - speed at which the packets travel (bits per second)
    • speed depends on the amount of info sent
  • protocols are a set of rules that both systems agree to
